Driving in your car without heat during the winter can be difficult. If you turn on your car heater and it is blowing out cold air, you need to get your heater checked to find the problem. If the problem with your heater is left ignored, it may cause a bigger and more expensive problem down the road.
Here are some possible reasons for a non-functional car heater:
Broken Blower Motor
The blower motor is the fan that pushes air through your heater core. You won’t get any heat if the blower motor is not functioning. The blower motor won’t work if:
- Its bearings are seized
- The motor is burnt
- The fan is clogged because of debris in the fan blades or clogged air filter cabin
Broken Blend Door
A problem with your blend door may not blow hot air. The function of the blend door is to direct air either around the heater core for cool air or over the heater core for heat. A servo motor or vacuum actuator controls the air blend door. If your car is new, you can see the condition of the blend door and its orientation by accessing the ventilation system through a scan tool. It can be difficult to diagnose if the blend door is stuck or mechanically broken. To diagnose this problem, you need to inspect the blend door.
Clogged Heater Core
A clogged heater core is one of the common causes of a non-functional car heater. The tubes of your heater core are more likely to collect debris, as these are the smallest coolant passages in your cooling system. Coolant flow will decrease if your heater core is clogged with debris, which will further decrease the heater’s ability to heat your car. Flush your heater core to remove debris and increase the coolant flow. You can use a garden hose or another pressurized water source to remove debris from your heater core.
If you do not feel hot air from your heater or if you notice any of these issues, schedule an appointment with us to diagnose and fix the problems with your heater.
